Old News (2002)

25 December 2002

Just over two months... I'm getting better... Anyway, have bought and made pages for; A Lost Stock Of Children, The Authority: Transfer Of Power, The Authority: Kev, Everything Can Be Beaten, Global Frequency 1, Global Frequency 2, Kabuki The Ghost Play, Mek number one, Mek number two, Nightmares & Fairy Tales, Issue #3, Popbot book three, Something At The Window Is Scratching, Y: The Last Man 4 and Y: The Last Man 5. And, so, have made title pages for; A Lost Stock Of Children, Everything Can Be Beaten, Global Frequency, Mek and Something At The Window Is Scratching.

Finally (over a year late) made the page for Preacher: Tall In The Saddle. Why so long? Because, back in the day, I included in this here sad and obsessive comic book library, details of comic books that belonged to friends of mine. Come Version 6, I culled all those. However, around that time, my friend Ian gave me this here book as a gift. And, because I forgot the cull, I forgot to add. Mistake is now corrected. Rejoice.

Octobering.

Summer holidays are long over, I'm back at university, and this time around I have internet access in my own home. Which could mean I update this thing every other day, like back in '99. Though, more likely, not.

A few new things about the place; blue rather than green, different header, a return of the 'Caleb Newcastle's Sad and Obsessive...' prefix (absent since April 2001). More comics bought and added. Some typos fixed, no doubt more introduced. Still no issue synopses.

Number Issue Two, a tiny little comic book I got for free from Gosh!, informed the current colour scheme of this site (making it look like slightly less a 'homage' to Andi Watson than it did before). That weird looking critter in the header bar is from the back cover of said book, which features the secret lives of pigeons and the story of a stickman. If you want to know more, emailing its creator, Simon Attfield, would be a step in the right direction.

Transmetropolitan is ended. It ended well, as did The WEF. Now I must read Transmet from start to finish. So must you.

Cinderella was funny and Y: The Last Man continues to be better than it has any right to be. More delicious Lenore has been consumed, and Johnny The Homicidal Maniac compliments it very well.

Megasad has returned. Huzzah.

13 October 2002

Nearly three months? I have bought many comic books in that time. They be: The Authority: Earth Inferno And Other Stories, Cinderella, Johnny The Homicidal Maniac: The Director's Cut, Lenore: Wedgies, Nightmares & Fairy Tales, Issue #2, Number Issue Two, Planetary / JLA: Terra Occulta, 3 Very Small Comics, Transmetropolitan 59, Transmetropolitan 60, Y: The Last Man 2, Y: The Last Man 3. All of which obsessiveness culminated in the creation of the Cinderella page and the Johnny The Homicidal Maniac page and the Number page and, finally, the 3 Very Small Comics page.

25 July 2002

Bought me some comic books this Sunday just gone. Geisha one-shot (at long last), 100 Bullets 36 (the last one I'm buying as a single; collections from now on), Transmetropolitan 57 and Transmetropolitan 58 (big boom soon) and Y: The Last Man 1 (accompanied by its very own page). Can you dig the dynamic linking and parenthesised comments? Can you?

Happy Belated Birthday.

Over four years this website has existed, more than three of those online. May 3rd was the birthday proper, but I've been away from my internet connection since early April. This place taught me HTML, passed time, brought me friends... destroyed my soul, made me antisocial, sucked my life away... Curse you, you stinking Comic Book Library! You go to hell! You go to hell and you die!

Ahem. So. Happy Birthday, dear website. Happy Birthday to you.

Back to the comic books, Popbot melts my mind. You should read it a couple of times, to try and work out what the hell is going on, but even then you won't have a clue. Hopefully this crypticism will pay off in the long run. Ashley Wood's art is wonderful in places, but always very murky. The man needs to discover Bright and Cheerful, as he does briefly on the cover opposite. Sam Kieth helps with the writing and so The Maxx turns up also.

I do still like comic books, honest I do. However, I also go to the comic book shops far less often than I used to. And now that I'm back home for the summer, I shouldn't be getting any more until September. Unless I bother to go and pester my old shop...

Transmet ends in November (or mid-September, for actual people (as opposed to silly publishers)), which is going to be powerful, however it turns out. I'm looking forward to reading Cinderella, published by Viz, but I'm probably going to drop the 100 Bullets monthly, in favour of the collections. In fact, probably going to do that with all comics from now on. Except the new Vertigo series, Y, about the last man on Earth. And more Lenore is needed, as soon as possible.

Yup, I still like comic books. I just sleep more than before is all. Eats up time.

Go see my new personal site. Good child.

Uploaded all new stuff done since last time (4th April), which is precious sod-all, really. New look guest book signer, some resampled images, new books, a different link colour. School's out for summer? Mm-hmm.

19 May 2002

Bought, and wrote data pages for, Dumped, The Fall, Lenore: Noogies, Nightmares & Fairy Tales, Issue #1 and Transmetropolitan 56. Dumped, The Fall, Lenore and Nightmares & Fairy Tales pages constructed.

5 May 2002

Bought, and wrote data pages for, Dark Part One, Dark Part Two, The Invisibles: Entropy in the U.K., 100 Bullets 34, 100 Bullets 35, Popbot book one, Popbot book two, Slow News Day six and Transmetropolitan 55. Yet to read them all. Dark and Popbot pages made. Some cover images resampled, to restore original aspect ratios.

Honkingly Huge Text.

Why is the text in this iteration of the site so honkingly huge? So that I can read it without squinting, Bubba. Text got progressively smaller in previous versions, so that I could pretend like I was designing an art site. But that's not what you're here for, is it? Nope, you're here because you're looking for information on a book or a writer or an artist. And, so long as you're looking for dry statistics, rather than soggy reviews, you've come to the right place. Hopefully. And now you can read it from across the room as well. Hoo-hah.

The picture on the front page is from Andi Watson's Slow News Day. 'Tis a good book, discussing differences between American and English culture, relationships, both romantic and otherwise, lizards too, all with the most expressive minimalist art you ever have seen. So, to reintroduce a feature from versions 4 and 5, I recommend you read it. I even include an appropriate illustration to tempt you, that of the cover to the latest issue. Damn, I'm good.

As an aside, if you can't see a title bar at the top of this page, a menu on the right, copyright crap down below, then you've got JavaScript disabled. Enable it now, else all you'll be able to read is this page, which, whilst funny, is nowhere near dry enough.

This website is all about comic books. I read them, I like them, I obsess over them for five years and spend uncounted weeks of my life typing in the 'details' of 550 individual books. For 'details' read 'pointless trivia', such as who lettered Brooklyn Dreams (Bob Lappan did). There'll be no literary criticism here, at least not for a good long while.

The News section lists updates made to the site, About tells you more of the story behind this place. All the Comics are listed alphabetically, Links to elsewhere are selected with some care, and a guestbook is available for you to Talk to me.

Enough of me explaining this place. Look around, read about comic books, weep over youth wasted.

4 April 2002

Completed and uploaded Version 7. Sign the guest book to let me know what you think of it.

17 March 2002

Bought (a few days ago), and wrote (today) the pages for, 100 Bullets 33, Slow News Day five, Transmetropolitan 53 and Transmetropolitan 54.

13 February 2002

Made the bi-monthly online update to this site, along with a sexy new splash page that (i) is much easier on the eyes and (ii) offers links to actual content other than this library. Have fun exploring and look forward to yet more impotent obsession in about seven weeks time.

12 February 2002

Bought three whole comics last Thursday. They be Dream Big Dreams, 100 Bullets 32 and Ship of Fools: Death and Taxes. Dream Big Dreams and Ship of Fools pages excreted.

3 February 2002

That D'Israeli book I ordered two months ago? It arrived today. Asylum did post it back in December but it never arrived. Curse those evil post office gremlins. D'Adventures of I.S.R.A.E.L.I.: Consequences was the book, D'Adventures of I.S.R.A.E.L.I. made to house it.

1 February 2002

Finally typed up details for those graphic novels I bought a couple of weeks ago. The Malice Family, Menz Insana and Poe Volume One data pages were made. So The Malice Family, Menz Insana and Poe title pages also.

20 January 2002

Tried to view my sites using Netscape Navigator 4.7 and discovered that, on top of its inability to properly render frames or CSS, it can't handle transparency in PNG files either. So, whilst I prefer PNG to GIF, and the fact that it's the future, I've converted back to GIFs. Grrr, argh.

17 January 2002

Bought the Kabuki: Metamorphosis hardcover and Slow News Day four. Also got three other books which I have yet to read. I'll write up their pages when I've done so.

11 January 2002

Bought Transmetropolitan 52. I should have Metamorphosis by next Tuesday.

4 January 2002

Bought From Cloud 99 - Memories Part 2 and ordered the Kabuki Metamorphosis hardcover.

I was looking at some of my website designs from last April and I pulled off some very cool stuff, especially with the digital manipulation. I got ahold of Photoshop over a month ago but have yet to really play with it. Hopefully there'll be more good stuff soon. Until then have a look at what I used to do.
